What you need to know about Glycol vs HVAC.

FAN COILS FOR COLD ROOMS, BARREL ROOMS, AND WALK-INS.

This is why you are loosing product in your barrel room

Glycol fan coils are better than HVAC systems for your barrel rooms.

HVAC systems target 30-50% humidity with the coils to keep your house comfortable. Who wants a humid house right? But you do want humidity in your barrel room. HVAC systems cool to 65F vs the 55F or lower that most barrels room require. We have seen product losses of 30% or more due to evaporation linked to HVAC units in barrel rooms.

Glycol systems run colder and target the 70% or higher humidity levels you want in your barrel rooms. We have seen product losses of 30% or more due to evaporation linked to HVAC units in barrel rooms.

If you have an HVAC or mini split unit in your winery barrel and storage room, you may feel that it addresses all of your humidity concerns. In most instances, the HVAC unit will remove most of the humidity from the area.

Glycol coils will help maintain your humidity levels, but will still remove some humidity from the room. HVAC systems will dry your storage rooms about 20-30% more than a glycol system and could lead to complications in your wine production. Even with a glycol coil you may want to add a misting system. Anytime a cold surface meets warmer air you will have condensation.

The less you have to top off your barrels the better. To correctly produce, age, and store your winery products, you need temperature control that allows you the most control over temperature and humidification. At Tanktemp, we build and install these systems everyday.

Heating and cooling your barrel room with your glycol system is an easy task for Tanktemp's glycol chillers and glycol fan coils. Most of the time, we are asked to target 55-60F range.  We can often do this with the same chiller that is used for your tanks. Colder temps are obtainable with the uses of more controls and defrost timers. Heating is also an option to allow for secondary and finishing.

There are spaces that should be heated and cooled with HVAC systems, just not your barrel rooms. We can help with those needs as well. Case storage, walk-in coolers, production space, we can cool all those with direct expansion or HVAC systems, just not your barrel rooms. Barrel rooms need special care.
